Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “önemsiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine rabıtlanmasıyla oluşan kısaca polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız kalıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok sayıda polipeptit madun birimi barındırır). Taban fark peptitlerin kısaca, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino hamız, özge amino asite temelli, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle rabıtlanır. Polipeptid binasına tıkızlan amino asitlerin her biri binaya peptid rabıtlarıyla rabıtlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir sutaş çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Averaj bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine tıkızlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin özge ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
